Which painting would turn out better; You sit alone and paint for 1 hour. Or. You sit with 4 friends, and each friend does 1 stroke and then passes the brush to the next person.

its hard to make a coherent painting when the idea leaves your mind

If you tried to make a painting by handing a brush round robin in a 4 person group, it would be shit. Art is the culmination of a significantly thought out idea in one persons mind, expressed through a medium.

To make anything great, one consistent entity must be in control. There are too many decisions made on any project for any form of distributed decision making system to be as coherent as a single decision entity (usually a human)

To believe this argument you must first understand the definition of art.

Art (noun):

The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.

  1. All projects are a type of art. A business plan, A software product, A car, A text message.

because they are all the result of a human's creative skill and imagination.

  2. Art is done by one entity, the artist. To believe this you need to accept that the human mind is capable of thoughts that can not be communicated to another human in a timely enough manner to collaborate when constrained by new ideas.

collaboration: an artist advised by a comittee comprising of a; paint color expert, canvas expert, pencil expert, brush expert. If he meets with his comitee once a week, and learns practicaly applicable ideas from these experts, he can incorporate them into his paintings, but it must be him who decies how to fit these techniques into his new ideas to improve his original plan.
